The department of Immunhaematology and Blood Transfusion, founded by Prof. dr. Jon. van Rood, is internationally well recognized for its work in the field of immunogenetics and transplantation immunology. It also contains the Eurotransplant Reference laboratory.

The main focus of research is the differential immunogenicity of HLA mismatches in clinical transplantation and pregnancy as a model for transplantation tolerance. Up to date facilities are available for HLA typing, antibody screening, monitoring of alloimmune reactions by both B and T cells and the development of human monoclonal antibodies reactive with epitopes on HLA molecules.
